Race 8 (Saturday, June 23, 2018: 4:57 p.m./ET; 1:57 p.m./PT)
Mile and a half on turf (three-year-olds and upward)
Trainer Roger Attfield has won seven of the 13 runnings of the Singspiel (G3) and saddles two runners (DANISH DYNAFORMER and FINAL COPY) this year. Will this Canadian training legend add to his Singspiel (G3) win total or will one of the other six runners play spoiler? Let’s attempt to answer that question:
#1 CAMELOT KITTEN is a full brother to Bobby’s Kitten, who won the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1). However, his last two runs have been very poor, finishing well behind the winners in Grade 1 and Grade 2 races. That said, maybe he was in a bit too tough in those events and he now drops in class for high percentage trainer Mike Maker. His last victory came three starts ago in the Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway Park.
#2 SHAHROZE (IRE) makes his second start off a four-month break after winning a first level allowance race at Belmont Park for trainer Graham Motion, who strikes at a 14% clip with runners making their second start off a layoff between 45-180 days. This gelding attracts top Woodbine rider Alan Garcia and one should keep in mind that his pedigree suggests he’ll enjoy running this mile-and-a-half distance. Possible upsetter.
#3 SEEKING ALBERT is another one making the second start in his form cycle. Last time out, he lost by 10 lengths in an allowance race, though one can be forgiving considering it was his first race in eight-and-a-half months. In his last start before the vacation, he ran fourth at odds of 40/1 in the Northern Dancer (G1), finishing behind #7 JOHNNY BEAR. He’ll need to run the race of his life to have a shot at hitting the board.
#4 ENGLISH ILLUSION finished well behind #5 FINAL COPY and #6 DANISH DYNAFORMER in an allowance race going a mile-and-a-quarter. He stretches out an extra quarter mile for this race and maybe that will help him considering his best races have come going marathon distances. That said, he’s another one that will need to take multiple steps forward to be competitive against the best in here.
#5 FINAL COPY pulled off a 7/1 mild upset on May 25, taking the field gate to wire in an allowance race over this turf course. However, he is winless in three starts when going this 12-panel distance, so he may not be better as the distances get longer. With that in mind, he defeated #6 DANISH DYNAFORMER in that May 25 event and the aforementioned rival is considered a contender in here. Expect this one to try to wire ‘em again.
#6 DANISH DYNAFORMER went off at 9/5 in the May 25 allowance and was simply second best to #5 FINAL COPY that day. Before that, he only lost by two-and-a-half lengths in his most recent graded stakes try, finishing behind top runners ONE GO ALL GO, OSCAR NOMINATED and next out winner IT’SINTHEPOST in the Elkhorn (G2) at Keeneland. If he can run back to that effort, he’ll be tough in this spot. Note that he already won this race once before, defeating Arlington Million (G1) winner HARDEST CORE in 2016 (his last trip to the winner circle).
#7 JOHNNY BEAR was a 9/1 upset winner of the Northern Dancer (G1) last September, defeating next out winner HAWKBILL that afternoon. He hasn’t been able to duplicate that run in three starts since then, however, and has finished behind #6 DANISH DYNAFORMER, #4 ENGLISH ILLUSION, #5 FINAL COPY and #8 PUMPKIN RAMBLE in his last two races. He’ll need to run back to that fall form to have any shot in this race. Playing against.
#8 PUMPKIN RUMBLE came from off the pace to win an allowance race going a mile over this turf course on June 3. He wheels back in three weeks and stretches out to a distance in which he is winless in four starts (ran third in this race last year). May be a notch or two below the best signed on in here.
